Those who go to the neighborhood of Lapa can feel the grandeur of Lisbon of old, in this traditional neighborhood, chosen by the nobility and upper class to reside par excellence. Its origin dates back to 1770, the year in which the parish of Nossa Senhora da Lapa was established. This area covers an area of 0.74 km² and is inhabited by eight thousand people.

Currently, as a result of the administrative reorganization of 2012, the parish of Lapa was extinguished and became part of the parish of Estrela, which also includes Prazeres and Santos-o-Velho. In Lisbon, the area that goes from Lapa to Estrela is synonymous with history and class. Many of the noble families of Lisbon have their houses in this area.

The Lapa is a zone of habitation par excellence, but that is not why it ceases to have an active commerce. It is in this noble zone of Lisbon that a large part of the embassies of foreign countries exist in Portugal, such as Austria, Bulgaria, China, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden and Switzerland.

It is also in the Lapa district that the São Bento Palace (Assembly of the Republic) is located and the official residence of the Prime Minister of Portugal.
